Hollywood's best known talents to prevent the passage of a law which would have prevented lesbians and gay men from teaching in the California school system. 20th Century's assigning him to the "Making Love" project itself showed their commitment to making an honest film.
Barry Sandler was (of course) very helpful to the
actors:
"Harry Hamlin went with me to several gay bars. He spent hours watching the men move, studying how they related to each other." Dan Melnic, the film's producer, also went with Barry to the bars.
"When I opened up to Dan about my sexuality, he was truly interested. Because of his interest in the quality of the film, he felt he needed to understand the lifestyle. Dan and I had several long talks before we began filming.".
Was it hard finding actors to play the parts? "Yeah, actors are naturally a nervous people. They know that the audience often doesn't separate the actor from the roll."
Were Michael (Ontkean) and Harry worried about their image?
"I think so. They haven't established themselves in film yet. They're taking some risk in doing these parts, especially since both, who are in real life straight, do it with such conviction. But they were both committed to the film. They're both promoting the film very hard, doing the talk show circuit and personal appearances." For two straight men, they sure know how to kiss. Barry laughs, "They sure do."
Do you feel the non-gay audiences will be able to handle the kissing scenes?
"I think so. The straight people who have seen the film. Iso far have been very positive. The kissing scenes are done in good taste. In fact, they can't even touch the daily soap operas. But, the evening saw the film, a middle aged straight couple walked out after the first kissing scene. There is also a recent national survey indicating that the one thing non-gay people have the hardest time dealing with is two men kissing.
A
Some people feel we don't go far enough with the lovemaking scenes and others feel we went too far. So, I guess we're just about right.
I think it will open a lot of people's eyes. Here's two professional men, a doctor and a writer, involved in a very positive open relationship. I chose a doctor as one of my major characters so the non-gay audiences can't say these are just two more sleaze faggots. Zack (Michael Ontkean) is a sensitive, loving man. When he. kisses Bart, he does it with love, not lust."
Sandler summed up with, "It's very important that this film make it. I don't have a lot of money invested; just my energy. But it is important to the future of gay films that "Making Love" make money. If it should fail, then I doubt that another studio will take a chance on a film that shows gay men or lesbians in a positive light."
